The year 1987 was a jubilee year for the Cantate choir from Maasmechelen. The then chairman Frans Meyers and conductor Maurice Delporte not only celebrated the twentieth anniversary of this choir with festive concerts, but they also organized the prestigious Cantate International Choir Competition for the first time, in which six Flemish and five foreign choirs immediately took part.
The tone had been set for a wonderful tradition. The members of Cantate, now led by Marie-Rose Van Gerven, are still the driving force behind this major international event. A driven team of enthusiastic volunteers makes every edition a successful choral event. Every edition of IKV, voices from all over the world, come to Limburg (Belgium). Each choir, from Belgium to Croatia, from Russia to Indonesia, shows its best side and tries to convince the professional jury with well-known and lesser-known music, melodies from their own country and of course with the imposed work, each time written especially for IKV by a renowned Flemish composer. Since 2013 these imposed works have been published by Euprint ed.
